Approximately 750 newspapers across the United States and around the world offer Newspaper in Education (NIE) programs. The Bryant Times is pleased to be one of these newspapers!

Newspapers are used in classes as a teaching tool at all grade levels and in all subject areas.

Research has shown that students who use newspapers as a learning resource have a better awareness of the world. And, their achievement scores and reading skills increase. The Bryant Times and the Arkansas Press Association are proud to be part of this exciting learning experience.

The Bryant Times' NIE program provides Bryant schools with newspapers and educational materials that will enhance learning through real-life experiences relevant to students' daily lives. Teachers, parents, and students are provided with hands-on learning activities, innovative ideas, and curriculum activities that turn the newspaper into a multipurpose resource. This living textbook is filled with up-to-date information and motivating activities relevant for every grade level. The Bryant Times is a new partner in the Arkansas Press Association's NIE program and we’re excited about the opportunity to bring this type of learning to Bryant’s children.

Program Goals

The Bryant Times' Newspaper in Education programs offer students the opportunity to develop:

  • a better understanding of their local community and the world around them.
  • an appreciation of their community and its quality of life.
  • an understanding of their own values and feelings about the community in which they live.
  • an awareness of the importance of the local newspaper as a continuous source of information about their community and the world around them.
  • skills in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • basic skills through a variety of reading, writing, and research activities.

We are currently featuring Buzzy's Beat in each week's edition for younger children, and a Character Education Series that follows along with the District's teachings. There are other programs we hope to bring to Bryant students including Kids Vote Arkansas, Civics Alive and Destination Democracy.

Bryant teachers have expressed enthusiasm at the NIE program from The Times. Children as young as kindergarten are enjoying the program, and learning each week from reading their newspapers. Teachers are using the newspaper to teach their students about current events, community issues, vocabulary, grammar, character, and much more!
